These nocturnal insects get their name as they are usually found in close proximity to beds, as they feed on humans sleeping in bed at night. The bite is painless whilst they feed and the blood meal takes about 10 minutes. Some people will notice bites on their skin, whereas others may not notice any visible signs of being bitten.
They identify the presence of a suitable host through body heat and carbon dioxide from exhaled breath. Once they have fed, they retreat to their hidden cracks and crevices for a week or so before seeking a further blood meal, however they can go up to a month without feeding. This is what can make detecting the presence of bed bugs difficult while the infestation levels are low. At Vergo, we have specially trained technicians and bed bug sniffer dogs who are experienced in bed bug detection and control, and we can offer quick and effective bed bug treatments anywhere across the UK.
They are primarily found where there is a heavy flow of people such as hotels and student accommodation. These places tend to report repeat infestations due to many people coming and going, and bed bugs can easily spread throughout the property on items such as bedding, luggage, and other items. Bed bugs can also be found on public transport, such as buses, trains, or taxis.
