Find out more CLOSEFleas can be easily missed by the naked eye as they are only 2-3 mm long, and an infestation can actually be dormant in a property. Various species, including flea cocoons, can remain dormant for years until they are awoken by the vibration of footsteps.
Adult fleas feed on the blood of mammals and birds by piercing their skin, which causes the animals to scratch regularly. The pests spread swiftly in numbers as they lay eggs in your carpet every day, and once they sense movement, they will jump onto your pet to wreak havoc. The troublesome insects can live between seven and 14 days long.
At Vergo pest control, we are well-aware that fleas are a common problem in the home when you have pets. They are a nuisance, but can also pose a serious problem for your animals, as disease can spread. It does not take long for an infestation to occur, so if you have spotted fleas in your home, do not hesitate to contact us.
It is incredibly rare for human fleas to live on people in this country, but they do exist. In most cases, people will get bitten by fleas when pets are being handled, and the most common areas affected are the lower legs and feet. This is because the tiny insects are nestled into your carpet.
Most of the time, fleas are regarded as a nuisance rather than a serious problem. Pets are mainly affected by the critters, and while itchiness is the overriding outcome, there is a risk of disease. A flea’s saliva is highly allergenic and can lead to Flea Allergic Dermatitis, which is a skin disease. On top of that, if a puppy or a kitten suffers a particularly severe infestation, they could contract anaemia.
As mentioned, your pets will be the ones that will suffer the most when it comes to a flea infestation. If your animal is scratching continuously, then it could mean that they have been targeted by fleas. Even though the dark brown insects are very small, they can be spotted within your pet’s fur, especially if the animal is light-haired. Also, keep an eye out for tiny black specks of dirt under your pets’ fur as fleas leave residue.
More often than not, a flea infestation will occur at some point when you have pets. However, there are a few ways that you can prevent it from happening. It is worth noting that the summer months are when your animal is likely to be targeted by the insects. Fleas are rife in the heat, but even in winter, if you have a warm central heated home, the creatures will make themselves known.
To help lessen your pets’ chances of being affected by the insects, you should de-flea your animal in the winter time. You should continue to do this regularly in order to prevent an infestation.
