The Vital Role of Bees: Protecting Pollinators & Responsible Bee Removal

Today, on World Bee Day, we’re shining a light on one of nature’s most fascinating and essential creatures – the bee! These tiny pollinators play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and even helping to put food on our plates.

At Vergo Pest Management, we’re passionate about protecting both people, properties and pollinators. So, let’s take a moment to celebrate these remarkable insects and understand why they deserve our respect and protection.

Fascinating Facts About Bees in the UK

  • A Diverse Bee Population: Did you know the UK is home to over 250 species of bees? This includes the well-known honey bee, around 24 types of bumblebees, and over 240 species of solitary bees!
  • Superstar Pollinators: Bees are responsible for pollinating around 80% of UK wildflowers and a large proportion of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy, from apples and strawberries to tomatoes and beans.
  • The Solitary Worker: Unlike their honey and bumblebee cousins, solitary bees live alone and don’t produce honey – but they’re incredibly efficient pollinators, often outperforming honeybees on a flower-by-flower basis.
  • Short but Sweet Lives: Bumblebee colonies are seasonal and usually die out by late summer. The queen then hibernates through winter, ready to start a new colony in spring.
  • Not All Bees Sting: Many species, particularly solitary bees, are completely harmless and rarely, if ever, sting.

Why Bees Are Crucial to Our Ecosystem

Bees aren’t just about honey; they’re key to life as we know it. Without them, our ecosystems would struggle to survive, and many of the foods we love would become scarce and expensive. Bees support:

  • Healthy wildflower populations
  • Strong crop yields for farmers
  • Biodiversity and thriving habitats for other wildlife

In short, bees are the silent guardians of our natural world.

When Bees Become a Concern

While we should always aim to leave bees undisturbed, we understand there are situations where their presence may pose a safety issue – particularly if:

  • If a bee’s nest is in a high-traffic area (e.g, near busy entrances, workspaces, or where children are present). In such cases, if a bee swarm becomes agitated, the risk of stings increases as the bees instinctively defend their nest.
  • Someone on-site has a serious allergy to bee stings
  • Honey bees have formed a colony within the structure of a building

In these cases, it’s important to act responsibly and consider bee nest removal.

How Vergo Can Help

At Vergo, we prioritise the relocation of bees where possible. Our experienced team works alongside local beekeepers and wildlife organisations to protect these essential pollinators while keeping people safe.

This World Bee Day, let’s celebrate bees for the heroes they are – nurturing our environment, supporting our food systems, and asking for so little in return. Protect them where you can, and when needed, trust Vergo to handle the situation with care.

If you encounter a bee swarm or nest and are unsure what to do, don’t take matters into your own hands.
