How to Keep Rodents Out This Autumn

As the weather cools, rodents start to seek warmth and food indoors, making homes and businesses prime targets for cosy shelters. Whether you manage a commercial property or want to protect your home, taking preventative measures is important.

Here are our recommendations and practical tips to prevent a rodent infestation before they even begin.

1. Seal Entry Points
Rodents can squeeze through tiny gaps, so sealing potential entry points is crucial. In order Inspect your home for cracks in the walls, gaps around doors and windows, and any openings around pipes or wiring. Use caulk or steel wool to seal these gaps.

If you are looking to rodent proof a commercial setting we advise checking loading docks, entrances, and any gaps in the building’s foundation. Install door sweeps and make sure exterior doors are always closed.

2. Maintain a Clean Environment
Rodents are attracted to food and clutter, so keeping areas tidy is essential, at home ensure food is stored in airtight containers, clean up crumbs, and regularly remove the rubbish. Avoid leaving pet food out overnight.

In the work place you should ensure kitchens, break-out rooms, and food storage areas are cleaned daily and implement a routine cleaning plan for the entire premises.

3. Eliminate Water Sources
Rodents need water to survive, and they will seek out accessible sources. Fixing any leaks under sinks, in bathrooms, and around your home’s exterior and try to avoid leaving pet water bowls out overnight. Regularly inspect plumbing, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) systems, and water sources. Repair leaks and consider installing dehumidifiers in damp areas.

4. Use Rodent-Resistant Materials
Make it as difficult as possible for rodents to gnaw their way into your property. Use steel mesh, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting to reinforce areas like the bottom of doors, vents, and eaves. Ensure that storage rooms, delivery areas, and other vulnerable spots are equipped with rodent-resistant materials.

5. Maintain the Exterior of Your Property
Rodents often find entry through overgrown vegetation or accumulated debris.  Trim back trees, bushes, and any plants that touch your home. Clear away piles of leaves, wood, or other debris. Pick up and dispose of any food waste. In a commercial setting keep landscaping maintained and clear out rubbish or unused materials around the building’s perimeter.

6. Set Traps and Deterrents
Be proactive in keeping rodents at bay, for domestic use we recommend placing traps or bait stations where rodents are likely to enter, such as basements, attics, or garages. In a commercial environment it would be best to use tamper-resistant bait stations around the exterior of the building, especially near loading docks or garbage areas.
