Find out more CLOSEWe are pleased to announce the acquisition of Expert Pest Control by Vergo Pest Management Ltd, which has officially completed on Friday 30 September 2022.
Find out more CLOSEWhile all wild bird species, including their nests and eggs, are protected by law in the UK, there are effective solutions to dealing with nuisance birds legally.
To deal with birds such as pigeons and seagulls causing problems, you will need the knowledge, experience, advice, and guidance of professionally qualified avian specialists.
Too many birds in the wrong place can be a nuisance, but there are legislative implications with any actions taken that affect bird species in the UK. This is governed by the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981).
All our methods for controlling nuisance birds comply with legislation set out by the above governing body, and are approved by the relevant legislative bodies:
Hawking is an entirely natural solution to deter pest birds such as pigeons and seagulls. Using specially trained birds of prey, such as Harris Hawks, we can deter these birds without harm. When pest birds regularly see birds of prey in a specific location, it convinces them that the raptor is resident in that area.
This makes the site far less attractive as a nesting or feeding location as they believe the birds of prey will attack them and their young. The pest birds will choose to find a safer place to nest elsewhere.
Throughout the pest birds breeding season we will make a number of visits to the affected site for our Egg and Nest Removal Programme. During these visits, all accessible eggs, nests, and related materials will be treated with a biocide and removed for safe disposal. This prevents adult birds raising their young on site, making the location unappealing and encouraging them to find another location.
The Egg and Nest Removal Programme is a long term treatment to reduce the flock size and deter nuisance birds from nesting. For this solution to be successful, it must be carried out over a three to five year period and, if stopped too early, the birds will return and continue to breed.
Here at Vergo Pest Control, our Bird of Prey Programme will involve a number of visits from the Bird Handler and Bird of Prey to the site throughout the year. The Bird Handler will establish the number of flights required each week, depending on the type of bird that needs deterring. Different species of birds require different approaches to successfully deter them.
When carrying out the Bird of Prey Programme, the Handler will vary the times that the Raptors are flown over the affected site. They will constantly monitor the bird infestation levels of the site and will increase or decrease the flying time as appropriate.
Our Bird Handler will use their experience and expertise to identify the most appropriate vantage points from which to fly the Birds of Prey. As they fly over the affected area, it will cause the pest birds to be disturbed, assuming the Raptor is threatening the colony. However, at no point will the Birds of Prey attack the pest birds as they are trained to be a deterrent only.
Bioacoustics, or bird scaring, replicates the bird’s distress calls and plays them back digitally. These sounds are a powerful warning cry, encouraging them to fly off and find somewhere else to roost. However, this technique is only suitable for gulls and winter roosts of starlings.
Depending on the pest birds, and the location of your site, a combination of the above Hawking, Egg and Nest Removal, and Bioacoustics solutions may be necessary. Our bird specialists will access and monitor your premises to ensure we offer you the most cost effective solutions to resolve any bird infestation issues.
Any of the above solutions are available for our commercial clients.
