Urban areas often face significant issues with pest birds such as pigeons and gulls. These birds can cause structural damage, health hazards, and nuisances for businesses and residents. Traditional methods of bird control, like netting or spikes, can be unsightly and occasionally harmful to the birds and environment. Our client tasked Vergo with finding an eco-friendly, effective, and ethical solution to their persistent problem with gulls nesting and roosting on their roof and decking area. The gulls posed a health & safety risk due to their fouling in addition to their aggressive nature.
Vergo introduced a programme that employs trained Harris Hawks – a natural predator of pest birds such as pigeons and gulls. Electra the hawk was flown in the targeted areas twice a week for 6-7 months to establish a predatory presence. Unlike lethal methods, the hawks do not harm the pest birds. Instead, their presence changes the behaviour of the pest birds, encouraging them to relocate. This natural method is non-lethal and does not involve harmful chemicals or unsightly physical barriers.
The hawking programme proved to be highly successful. The hawks’ routine patrols over the affected areas led to a fundamental shift in the gulls’ behaviour. The gulls chose to relocate naturally, thus averting the previous confrontations and damage associated with their nesting and roosting activities. As a direct consequence of the tailored program, the client was able to reclaim the previously compromised spaces.
Building on the success of the initial implementation of the programme, our client is renewing their contract in anticipation of the upcoming gull season. This renewal highlights the effectiveness of the natural deterrent strategy provided by the hawking method.
We were unable to access our roof terrace for fear of the seagulls attacking us. Matt and Electra from Vergo came to site twice weekly throughout nesting season in a bid to control them – and since the contract ended, we have had no issues at all. We’ll be sure to start the contract well before the nesting season starts again. Excellent service with great results. Business Operations Manager, City Finance Consultants
