Bird Netting Solution

Sector: Food Retailer

Location: Port Seton

Specialist Proofing Technicians: Iain Appleby, Niall Jones, Lewis Kivil and Scott Alexander

The Problem:

A food retailer in Port Seton was facing a significant issue with gulls nesting on the roof area. The presence of these birds was causing multiple problems, including health hazards from droppings, noise disturbances, and potential damage to roof structures. Additionally, the nesting gulls were obstructing access for maintenance contractors needing to service fan units on the roof.

The Challenges:

  • Identify Effective Bird Deterrent: The solution needed to effectively deter gulls from nesting while allowing maintenance access.
  • Durability and Maintenance: The solution had to be durable and low-maintenance to ensure long-term effectiveness.
  • Contractor Access: It was crucial to ensure that the solution did not hinder contractors’ access to the roof and fan units.

Our Solution:

  • Site Assessment: A detailed inspection of the roof area was conducted to understand the extent of the gull problem and identify the best locations for installing deterrents.
  • Installation of Bird Netting: A 75mm bird netting was selected for its effectiveness in preventing gulls from accessing and nesting on the roof. The netting was installed on 2m stanchions to provide the necessary height and coverage.
  • Access Consideration: The installation was designed to allow maintenance contractors easy access to the fan units. The 2m stanchions provided sufficient height to create a barrier for the gulls while still permitting human access.
  • Durable Materials: The netting and stanchions were made from high-quality, durable materials to withstand weather conditions and ensure long-term functionality.

The Results:

The bird netting solution installed by Vergo Pest Management proved to be highly effective in resolving the gull nesting problem at the store. Since the installation, no reports of gulls nesting on the roof have been reported. The netting has successfully deterred the birds, maintaining a cleaner and quieter environment around the store. Maintenance contractors have been able to access the fan units without any obstruction, ensuring that regular maintenance activities continue smoothly.
