The Problem:

A food retailer in Glasgow faced a significant problem with rats accessing their bin store. The presence of rats posed serious health risks, threatened the hygiene standards of the site, and could potentially lead to reputational damage. The rats were entering the bin store through gaps at the perimeter, creating an urgent need for a reliable and long-lasting solution.

The Challenges:

Identify and Secure Entry Points: The main challenge was to identify all potential entry points for the rats and secure them effectively.
Durable and Effective Solution: The solution needed to be durable, ensuring long-term prevention of rat ingress.
Aesthetically Pleasing Finish: The installation had to be neat and tidy, with the site left in a condition that maintained the retailer’s high standards of cleanliness.

Our Solution:

Vergo Pest Management developed and executed a comprehensive plan to address the rat ingress problem at the food retailer site:

Site Inspection and Assessment: The bin store area was thoroughly inspected to identify all entry points and assess the level of infestation.
Steel Plate Installation: A 1.2m high steel plate was selected as the primary barrier to prevent rat ingress. This steel plate was installed around the entire perimeter of the bin store, creating a robust physical barrier against the rats.
Cement Reinforcement: The earth around the bin store was carefully dug up to prevent the rats from burrowing underneath the steel plate. Cement was then applied around the steel plate base where it met the concrete base of the bin store, sealing any potential entry points below ground.
Site Restoration: After the cementing process was completed, the soil was reinstated around the perimeter, ensuring that the bin store area was left neat and tidy and in a condition that met the retailer’s operational standards.

The Results:

The rat-proofing solution implemented by Vergo Pest Management successfully resolved the issue of rat ingress at the site. Since the installation, no further reports of rat activity in the bin store have been reported, indicating that the measures taken effectively provided a long-term solution. The client has expressed satisfaction with the outcome, particularly noting the thoroughness of the work and the clean finish of the site.
