Biological Control with Beneficial Insects

Vergo’s Natural Non-Toxic Approach To Treat The Common Furniture Beetle

How to treat woodworm with beneficial insects?

We offer an innovative, eco-friendly solution using beneficial insects.

The common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) commonly known as woodworm, poses a significant threat to wooden structures, furniture, and artifacts. While effective, traditional chemical treatments often raise environmental and health concerns.

Vergo offers an innovative, eco-friendly solution using beneficial insects (parasitic wasps) to control these wood-boring pests effectively.

Biological Control with Beneficial Insects

Parasitic wasps (Spathius exarator), specifically from the family Pteromalidae, are natural predators of the larvae of wood-boring beetles. These wasps which are already indigenous in the UK have evolved to locate and parasitize the larvae of the common furniture beetle, providing a targeted and sustainable method of pest control.

How It Works

The life cycle of Spathius Exarator

  1. The female wasp detects furniture beetle larva, pierces its ovipositor into the timber and paralyses it.
  2. The wasps places one egg at the woodworm
  3. The larva of the wasp hatches and feeds on the beetle larva
  4. The furniture beetle larva dies. The wasps larva pupates and hatches as an adult wasp through the wood surface by gnawing a tiny hole.
  5. The young parasitic wasp searches for a new beetle larva to parasitise.

Benefits of Using Parasitic Wasps to Treat Furniture Beetle

  • Eco-Friendly and Chemical Free: Eliminates the need for harmful chemical pesticides, providing a natural solution whilst protecting the environment and human health.
  • Targeted Control: Specifically targets woodworm larvae, minimising the impact on non-target species and ecosystems.
  • Completely Non-Toxic: Safe for use in homes, museums, historic buildings, and other sensitive areas.
  • Sustainable: Provides long-term control by establishing a self-sustaining population of parasitic wasps.
  • Economic: Avoids the need for disruption, closure or vacating property during treatment.
